How to Check and Pay TMS Fines in Tanzania

How to Check and Pay TMS Fines in Tanzania

Tanzania’s Traffic Management System (TMS) has transformed how motorists check and settle traffic fines. Instead of handling fines on paper or through police checkpoints, vehicle owners and drivers can now check outstanding penalties online, by phone, or via mobile money — all directly tied to the official TMS database managed by the Tanzania Police Force (TPF).

Whether you’re a local driver or a visitor driving around Tanzania, knowing how to check and pay fine records helps you stay compliant, avoid surprises at checkpoints, and keep your driving record clean.

What Is TMS (Traffic Management System)?

The Traffic Management System (TMS) is an official digital platform by the Tanzania Police Force that stores traffic violation records, fines, vehicle data, and driver information. Through this system, you can:

✔ Check for outstanding fines or traffic offences
✔ View penalty amounts
✔ Get reference/control numbers needed for payment
✔ Verify whether penalties have already been settled

This system promotes transparency, reduces corruption risks, and lets motorists manage fines with convenient electronic tools.

Why Check Your TMS Fines?

Before paying or renewing documents, it’s important to:

  • Ensure you don’t have unpaid fines linked to your vehicle registration number

  • Check any fines tied to your driving licence

  • Avoid penalties or extra charges for overdue fines

  • Clarify errors or disputes before they escalate

How to Check Your TMS Traffic Fines

There are multiple methods to check traffic fines in Tanzania:

1. Online via the Official TMS Website

  1. Open the official TMS portal: https://tms.tpf.go.tz (the official site from Tanzania Police Force).

  2. On the homepage, choose a search method:

    • Vehicle registration number

    • Driving licence number

    • Reference/control number from a traffic ticket

  3. Enter the details correctly (e.g., plate T123ABC or licence no.).

  4. Click Search to see any outstanding fines.

Tip: Always check the official TMS site, and avoid third-party pages that claim to show fines without linking to the official TMS database.

2. Using a USSD Code (No Internet Needed)

If you don’t have internet access:

  1. Open your phone’s dialer.

  2. Dial: *152*75#

  3. Follow the prompts to enter:

    • Your vehicle registration number, or

    • Your driving licence number

  4. You’ll receive an SMS reply showing any pending fines and a control number for payment.

This is especially helpful in areas with limited data coverage.

3. Mobile Apps or Third-Party Tools

Some officially approved mobile apps and services connect to the TMS database so you can search fines directly on your phone. Always download apps from trusted sources (Google Play or Apple App Store) and ensure they connect to the official system.

4. In Person at Police Stations or Wakalas

If online and phone methods aren’t convenient, you can also visit:

  • A traffic police station

  • A government revenue office

  • A mobile money agent (wakala)

Provide your registration or licence number and ask them to check your TMS fines for you.

How to Pay Your TMS Traffic Fines

Once you confirm you have a fine, you’ll generally see a control/reference number and an amount due. Here are the common payment methods:

1. Pay Using Government e-Payment Gateway (GePG)

GePG is the official channel that processes TMS payments. You can pay fines online, in apps, or through mobile money services linked to GePG.

Via Mobile Money (most popular):

You can use:
M-Pesa
Tigo Pesa
Airtel Money
Halotel

Most mobile money platforms let you:

  1. Select PayBill / Government Payments

  2. Enter the GePG control/reference number

  3. Enter the exact fine amount

  4. Confirm with your PIN

  5. Receive a confirmation SMS receipt

Always save your receipt — this acts as proof in case of queries.

2. Pay at Bank Counters or Wakalas

You can also settle your traffic fines at:

  • NBC Bank

  • NMB Bank

  • CRDB Bank

  • Approved bank wakalas

Give the teller your reference/control number and pay cash or direct transfer. Ask for a printed receipt.

Important Tips Before You Pay

Check fines yourself first before paying anyone at the roadside.
✅ Always pay through official channels (GePG or recognised banks/mobile money).
Keep your receipts — it’s your best protection if something goes wrong.
✅ Don’t click suspicious SMS links. If a site doesn’t look official, re-verify using the main TMS domain.

🧑‍⚖️ What If You Disagree With a Fine?

If you believe a fine is wrong:

  1. Collect any supporting evidence (photos, witness statements, GPS logs).

  2. Visit the nearest police station where the ticket was issued.

  3. Request a review within the allowed time frame.

  4. If unresolved, follow their formal dispute or appeal procedures.
