Engineered Piping Components: Forged Fittings and Electropolished Stainless Systems

Components​‍​‌‍​‍‌ that are capable of playing the role of high-pressure, temperature cycling, and corrosive media resistance are the main parts of industrial piping systems in oil, gas, power, and process plants. Usually, the forged steel fittings manufacturers who supply ASTM A105, A182 F11, F22, and F304/304L products are required to have their products tested for conformance to ASME B16.11, B16.5, and MSS SP-79 standards. Socket weld and threaded types of these fittings are made for pressure classes 2000, 3000, 6000, and 9000, with their sizes ranging from 1/8 inch to 4 inches. In order to have the right yield strength, impact values, and grain structure control, the heat treatment processes of normalizing, quenching, and tempering are carried ​‍​‌‍​‍‌out.

Material traceability, forging reduction ratios, and dimensional tolerances are just a few of the major aspects during inspection especially if the parts are going to be used in sour service or high-cycle fatigue applications. Carbon steel and alloy steel forgings undergo ultrasonic examination, magnetic particle testing, and PMI to confirm the chemical composition and internal soundness. Design engineers choose to specify NACE MR0175 compliance, controlled sulfur content, and exact thread profiles in order to guarantee that there will be no compatibility issues when the time comes for valve, flange, and seamless pipe system integration at refineries, LNG terminals, and offshore platforms which operate under variable load conditions.

Choosing the correct surface finish is also of great concern in hygienic and high-purity services, most notably in pharmaceutical and food processing establishments. In these systems, for example, the use of SS 316 electropolished pipe is indicated for its low surface roughness, higher corrosion resistance, conformance to ASTM A270, and availability in schedules 5S to 40S with exact OD and wall tolerances for critical transfer lines and ​‍​‌‍​‍‌sampling.
