Pitru Paksha 2025 – Simple Guide for Shradh, Tarpan and Pind Daan

Pitru Paksha, we all know, is a very special time in our Sanatan Dharma. Every year this 15 days come, and we remember our Pitrs, our forefathers. In our dharmic shastra it is written again and again, if Pitrs are happy, then Devas are also happy, family also becomes happy. If Pitrs are not satisfied, then problems keep coming. That is why these 15 days are very important.

I am not big scholar. I am just telling what I heard from my Guruji, from shastra, from elders. In Garuda Purana Bhagwan Vishnu himself told that Shradh in Pitru Paksha is like giving food and water to Pitrs. In Mahabharata Bhishma Pitamah told Yudhishthira that Shradh uplifts 10 generations before and after. So this is not small thing.

What is Pitru Paksha

The meaning is simple. Pitru means forefathers, and Paksha means 15 days, fortnight. This time comes in Bhadrapada month Krishna Paksha. It starts just after Ganapati Visarjan and ends on Mahalaya Amavasya.

In these 15 days, it is believed Pitrs come near to earth. They wait, they look, will my children remember me, will they give water, pind, food. If yes, then Pitrs go back satisfied and give blessings. If not, then they feel sad, they remain restless.

If you know death tithi of your father, grandfather, mother, then Shradh is done on that tithi. If you don’t know, or if no one is there, then on Amavasya day Shradh is done for all Pitrs together. That is called Mahalaya Shradh.

Why This Time is Important

In Sanatan Dharma, we say three debts – Dev Rina, Rishi Rina, Pitru Rina. For Pitru Rina, Shradh is the main way. By this we repay them, at least a little.

Family is like a tree. Roots are Pitrs. If we water roots, tree will be green, will give shade, fruits, flowers. If roots are dry, tree becomes weak. Same way, if Pitrs are remembered with rituals, family becomes strong. If ignored, then doshas come.

Many people ask me, why so many problems in my family? Why marriage is not happening? Why health issues again and again? Many times reason is Pitru Dosha. When Pitrs are not happy, planets also don’t support.

Shastra and Pitru Paksha

Our granthas tell many things about Pitru Paksha.

  • In Garuda Purana, Vishnu Bhagwan says, food and water offered in Shradh reach the soul in subtle form.

  • In Matsya Purana, it is told, if someone has no son, even relatives or friends can do Shradh, benefit goes to the departed.

  • In Manusmriti, Shradh is called duty of every householder.

  • In Rigveda, Pitru Sukta mantras are there, very strong mantras to connect with Pitrs.

  • In Jyotisha Shastra, Pitru Dosha is mentioned, when Pitrs are not happy or some karmas not finished, it comes in horoscope.

So, this is not just tradition. This is direct dharma given by rishis and Devas.

What Rituals Are Done in Pitru Paksha

Shradh Puja

This is main. In Shradh we offer cooked food, pind (rice balls with Til and ghee), water, and mantras. Panditji guides the process as per tithi. Food is also given to cow, crow, and Brahmin. Why crow? Because crow is believed messenger of Pitrs. Why cow? Because cow is sacred and connected to dharma.

Shradh gives satisfaction to Pitrs. They receive food in subtle form and bless the family.

Tarpan

Tarpan means offering water. Water is mixed with Til (sesame) and darbha grass. It is offered with mantras. This quenches thirst of Pitrs. Especially on Mahalaya Amavasya, Tarpan is very strong. On that day, even unknown, forgotten, unclaimed souls are satisfied.

Pind Daan

This is also very important. In Pind Daan, rice balls are offered with Til and ghee. It is said in Garuda Purana, without Pind Daan soul cannot move to higher lokas. By Pind Daan, Pitrs leave worldly attachments and move forward. That is why in Gaya ji, Trimbakeshwar, Prayagraj, people do Pind Daan.

Pitru Sukta Path

From Rigveda, Pitru Sukta mantras are chanted. When pandits chant these mantras, Pitrs are invoked directly. It cleans negative energy, ensures offerings reach Pitrs, and brings blessings. This is not just ritual, it is vibration, it is sound energy connecting generations.

Til Daan

Til (sesame) is very sacred. In Brahma Purana it is written, sesame removes sins and gives purity. In Pitru Paksha, Til is offered in water, in agni (fire), and also given as daan to Brahmins. Small act, but very strong effect.

Pitru Dosha in Horoscope

In Jyotish, many times we see Pitru Dosha. Planets like Surya, Chandra, Rahu, Ketu show this. Symptoms are clear –

  • Marriage delay or broken marriage

  • Problems in getting child

  • Sudden health problems in family

  • Loss of money again and again

  • Quarrels and no peace at home

Shastra says, main remedy is Shradh, Tarpan, Pind Daan in Pitru Paksha. Along with that, Pitru Sukta path and Til daan. Many families after doing this see change in life.

  • Any family having Pitru Dosha in horoscope

  • Those who lost parents or forefathers but could not do Shradh properly

  • Anyone who wants to thank ancestors and take blessings

Shradh is not about big money or show. Even simple Shradh done with faith is accepted by Pitrs. The main thing is shraddha (faith).

Blessings of Shradh

In shastra it is written, Shradh done with devotion gives punya equal to great yajnas. Pitrs, when happy, bless family with health, wealth, harmony, protection.

I have seen with my own eyes, after Shradh, people telling me their problems slowly reduced. Marriage fixed, business grew, children became healthy. This is not magic. This is blessing of Pitrs.
